Car Donation Helping You Help Those in Need

Car donation offers many people a solution to a two pronged
dilemma, providing both a unique opportunity to give to charity
while sparing the time and expense of getting rid of a vehicle
that may no longer be of use to a family. For many, the amount
of money earned from selling an old car is not worth the
investment of time and effort involved in placing and ads and
showing the vehicle to prospective buyers, but car donation
allows you to side-step these problems, while ensuring that a
worthy cause benefits.

Car donation really couldn’t be easier, and there are a variety
of car donation charities to choose from. The disposal service
they offer to you is complete, with most organisations arranging
for the collection of the vehicle from your home. Employing
various professional towing services that contact you directly
to make arrangements that are suitable to you, you can be sure
of a reliable service. So if car donation sounds right for you,
what do you need to know?

There are several car donation services around the country, but
some are limited to collection in certain states. A quick
internet search will help you find one that collects from your
area. Once you have found an organization that makes pick-ups in
your locality, you will need to find out whether your car is
suitable for donation. These organizations accept a wide variety
of vehicles, even ones that no longer run, but not collect those
that will incur costs than the money they will make. Most car
donation services will ask you to complete a brief questionnaire
to help them ascertain the suitability of your vehicle for
donation. Car donation organizations usually ask that you also
give them the title to the vehicle, but often arrangements can
be made if this has been misplaced.

Car donation is a simple way for you to give to charity and
donation is also not without its benefits to you. Car donations
made to charities registered with the IRS as non-profit
charitable organizations are tax deductible – see IRS
Publication 4303 for full details.

Car donation is the ideal way to get rid of that vehicle you no
longer need, while bringing great benefits to those in need.
Selling that old car might earn you a few dollars to add to your
wallet, but car donation will help those same few dollars make a
real difference.

Habitat for Humanity Cars for Homes

Vehicles that may not mean a lot to you can make a difference in the lives of families in need by donating them to Habitat for Humanity’s Cars for Homes program.

Donated cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, RVs and other vehicles are sold and the funds raised help build simple, decent homes in partnership with low-income families. Donors receive an acknowledgement letter for their vehicle donation they may use for tax purposes if they itemize deductions. Vehicle, title and contact information is collected, and upon acceptance of the vehicle, arrangements are made for the vehicle, keys and title to be picked up.

“The Cars for Homes program provides a great opportunity to donate a vehicle as an additional way to help families in your community who are living in substandard conditions and simply need a hand up, not a hand out,” said Barry Kurland, general manager of Habitat for Humanity’s Cars for Homes program.

For information on how you can help eliminate poverty housing and homelessness, and potentially qualify for tax benefits for your vehicle donation, call Habitat for Humanity Cars for Homes at 1-877-277-HFHI (4344)

Quick Tips for Donating a Vehicle
• Make sure the nonprofit organization is reputable by being familiar with its purpose and work in the community. Check with the local Better Business Bureau or similar organization to see if the nonprofit is in good standing.
• Inquire what percent of the vehicle’s sales go directly to the nonprofit organization. Habitat for Humanity receives between 70 and 85 percent of the total donation (after towing fees, etc.).
• Make sure the tower is licensed and insured and the donated vehicle will be sold through a licensed dealer.
• Sign the vehicle’s title directly to the nonprofit organization or their certified agent.
• Ask the nonprofit organization how funds from the donated vehicle will be used.

New 2005 car donation tax deduction laws

Taxpayers can save themselves some stress, and definately money, by starting to plan their filing before the end of the year. A popular way to get a nice tax deduction has been to donate your car to a charity.

So what changes in the tax laws should we take a look at?

The standard deduction has been increased.
For married people filing jointly, it’s now $9,700, up from $9,500.
For head of household it’s $7,150, up from $7,000.
For single or married filing separately it’s $4,850, up from $4,750.

So if you’re close to meeting your deduction, you may want to make a donation to a charity.

This change in tax laws means those generous donations won’t bring as big a break from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) after Jan. 1.
Under current law, a taxpayer filing an itemized tax return can deduct the fair market value of an automobile given to a nonprofit.
Starting next year, if the charity resells the car, the maximum deduction will be the sale price.

Take advantage an donate your car to charity in 2004 before you miss out!

Aid to the Blind

Car Donation in Boston

There are many worthwhile charities to consider for car donation in the Boston area. It would be impossible to list all of these. I will, however, list one of the most deserving charities.

Greater Boston Aid to the Blind

Greater Boston Aid to the Blind an agency dedicated to helping people who are visually impaired. They focus on adults who are 50 and older. They deal with their personal support and rehabilitation. Their goal is to help the visually impaired lead independent lives.
Greater Boston Aid to the Blind accepts all cars made after 1987. The car should be running, but can be in non-running condition if it is due to something minor, such as a dead battery. You must have clear title to the car to donate it.

These are the steps to car donation:
1. Call and they will take down your title information and address.
2. You will receive a letter of thanks, a tax form to fill out, and a page from N.A.D.A. Appraisal Guide with your car’s make, model, and trade-in value highlighted.
3. Your pick-up order is faxed to the auction company.
4. A towing company will pick up your vehicle within 10 days.

A good thing about donating a car to Greater Boston Aid to the Blind is that they receive the full sale value of the car when it is sold at auction, minus the towing expenses. So, when you donate to them, you can be sure that they are getting most of the money.
You can contact Grater Boston Aid to the Blind at:

Greater Boston Aid to the Blind
